4 projects supported by UBICS receive 18,000 euros in the call for grants for activities that promote synergies in research

The University of Barcelona has awarded 13 grants in the call for activities that promote synergies in research, with a total amount granted of 55,625 euros. Among the selected proposals are four projects that receive support from the UBICS and have been endowed with a total of 17,955 euros.

The first is the workshop called Transdisciplinary challenges in neuroscience: experimental tools, data, and biophysical modeling. It was organized by Dr. Jordi Soriano Fradera, professor of the Departament de Física de la Matèria Condensada in the Facultat de Física of the UB and member of the Institute of Complex Systems (UBICS), and professor of biomedicine in the Facultat de Medicina of the UB and member of the Institute of Neurosciences (UBNeuro) Dra. Mercè Masana. This project has been given 4,655 euros, and our institute and UBNeuro will be in charge of it. The faculties of Medicine, Physics, Biology, Mathematics and Computer Science, and Psychology will also be involved.

The professor of the Department d’Enginyeria Química i Química Analítica of the Facultat de Química and member of the Water Research Institute (IdRA), Dr. Julio Bastos-Arrieta, promotes the AMES 26 project: Active nano/microsystems in the Spanish context, endowed with a grant of 4,500 euros. This is the continuation of the symposium called AMES 24: Active nano/microsystems in the Spanish context, which took place in 2024 and which involved the Institute of Complex Systems (UBICS), the Facultat de Química, the Facultat de Física, the Water Research Institute (IdRA), the Institute of Theoretical and Computational Chemistry (IQTC), and the Institute of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (IN2UB). The symposium was also supported by several scientific institutions and societies, such as the vicerectorat de Recerca of the UB, the Royal Spanish Society of Chemistry (RSEQ), and the Specialized Group of Nanoscience and Molecular Materials (GENAM), among others. AMES 26 will focus on active matter and active nano/microsystems, just like that event did.

On the other hand, our institute has also been involved in the organization of the Jornada científica per la creació d’escenaris socials sostenibles, an activity promoted by the Hub en Sostenibilitat Global that has received 4,600 euros, and the second edition of the Jornada de recerca dels investigadors Ramón y Cajal de la Universitat de Barcelona, promoted by the researcher of the Chemistry In Flow and Nanomaterials Synthesis (ChemInFlow) research group, Dra. Maria Guix . This activity has obtained 4,200 euros in this call for grants.

With the goal of encouraging interdisciplinarity and transdisciplinarity among the various research structures of the Universitat de Barcelona, the vicerectorat de Recerca has promoted the call for grants for activities that foster research synergies at the UB. This will help to foster collaboration among disciplines to tackle a common challenge, resulting in synergies that are clearly international in orientation and beneficial to society. The call was published on September 16, 2025, and it was officially over on October 30, 2025.
