There is one junior postdoc position available to work at the Universitat de Barcelona Institute of Complex Systems (UBICS)

in the project “Nonlinear dynamics in complex multilayer networks under uncertainty (NETUND)”. The team conducting this project is formed by Conrad Pérez-Vicente, Matteo Palassini, and Albert Diaz-Guilera.  

The global objective of the coordinated project is to reduce uncertainty in the study of nonlinear dynamical processes in multilayer complex networks whose structure is not completely known, because of either empirical limitations in its observation or unknown time dependences. We aim at reducing both uncertainties in the topology and in the intrinsic (dynamical) properties of the nodes. For instance, the study of synchronization processes in networked populations of oscillators, where the topology of interactions is partially known and/or the natural frequency of the oscillators is also undetermined, is of utmost importance to understand neural processes.

The project includes two complementary parts: (i) building a mathematical framework for the analysis of structural properties of multilayer networks under uncertainty in the connectivity patterns, and (ii) proposing mathematical tools for the analysis of nonlinear dynamics, specifically synchronization and spreading processes (epidemics, information, etc.), in this context. The outcome of these two parts will be used to study the physical properties of complex systems that present the aforementioned structural uncertainty.  

The candidate shoudl hold a PhD preferably in Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science, or similar, and have expertise on complex networks.  

The offer is for 1-year and the gross annual salary is 24.000€ (before taxes). There will be additional support under the funded project for conference attendances.

Title: Pattern formation in cytoskeletal and cellular systems

Abstract: Living cells rely on the self-organization mechanisms of cytoskeleton to adapt to their requirements. In processes such as cell division, or cellular motility rely on the controlled self-assembly and disassembly of well defined active cytoskeletal structures interacting with lipid membranes. One important and promising strategy to identify the underlying governing principles is to quantify the underlying physical processes in model systems mimicking functional units of living cell. Here I’ll present in vitro minimal model systems consisting of active microtubule and actin filament systems which show pattern formation resulting from active transport processes. I will discuss how small variations in local interactions results in nematic or polar patterns in high density motility essays. On the supra-cellular level I will discuss how collective motion of epithelial cells in 3D networks lead to a tension feedback mechanism, ultimately leading to the formation of higher order structures in human mammary gland organoids.

The UB offers an Early-Stage-Researcher (ESR) position which allows the researcher to work towards a PhD.

Title: ESR4-ML and interactive 3D visualisation of temporal point clouds for predicting morphological changes.

Description: Learning models of temporal point clouds is at the core of geometric and geographical studies. Morphological changes are typically derived by calculating distances between points from different acquisitions. This thesis is at the crossroad of ML and 3D visualization, aiming at predicting temporal point clouds. We define a model for temporal point clouds based on shapes, topology, and sampled properties, and we will study different approaches to predict morphological changes. Usually, the interpretation of the properties and surface changes relies on a human, while gathering visual information contained in the data requires expertise by the user. To assist users,we analyse and study interactive visualization to improve the expert understanding and the performance of ML. Expected Results: ML models for predicting temporal point clouds and tools for assisting humans in visualizing surface changes when predicting rock falls. The software should help humans identify characteristics of geomorphological models.The project will take place at the Mathematics Dept of the University of Barcelona. Secondments will take place at ATHENA RC (Athens, Greece) and at industrial partner RISC-Software (Linz, Austria). This position is offered within the framework of GRAPES, which is part of the Marie Sklodowska-Curie Actions —Innovative Training Networks (ITN) funding scheme.The ESR will be recruited within 2020 for a duration of 36 months.The ESR will have secondment visits (internships) to other members of the Network, including industrial partners. The planned secondments are listed below but may change as the individual projects evolve. ESR will also attend the Network meetings and Training events throughout Europe. A Career Development Plan will be established by the time of recruitment describing the scientific goals and methods, the secondments, any courses to be taken, and the personal, professional and career development of the ESR, and how it shall be achieved.

Primera demostració experimental de la hipòtesi de l‘autodomesticació de l‘ésser humà

Un nou estudi de la Universitat de Barcelona revela la primera demostració genètica de l’autodomesticació humana, una hipòtesi que explica que els humans van desenvolupar un comportament més amigable i cooperatiu seleccionant els seus companys segons el caràcter. Els investigadors han identificat una xarxa genètica implicada en aquesta trajectòria evolutiva cap a la prosocialitat que també està relacionada amb la morfologia del rostre, i que no s’ha trobat en el genoma dels neandertals.

L’estudi, publicat a la revista Science Advances, és fruit de la col·laboració entre l’equip de la UB liderat per Cedric Boeckx, professor ICREA de la Secció de Lingüística General del Departament de Filologia Catalana i Lingüística General, i membre de l’Institut de Sistemes Complexos de la UB (UBICS), i investigadors de l’equip de Giuseppe Testa, professor de la Universitat de Milà i l’Institut Europeu d’Oncologia.

UBICS projects 28/11/2019

Los días 28 y 29 Noviembre se celebrará el evento DataPolitik2019, 1a Jornada sobre política y comunicación en la era del big-data, organizada por la asociación Heurístca con el grupo de investigación Tecnopolítica - IN3/UOC y la colaboración del LID y del UBICS.   Esta jornada quiere ser una invitación al diálogo interdisciplinar y a la puesta en común de perspectivas metodológicas, visiones sociopolíticas, resultados concretos y líneas de investigación acerca de cómo los entornos digitales han cambiado la estructura de la comunicación y las gramáticas de interacción social. Un primer paso para constituir espacios en los que la ciencia de la comunicación, la sociología, la politología y la ciencia de los sistemas complejos, entre otras disciplinas, colaboren para mejorar nuestra comprensión de lo que ocurre en las plataformas sociales.   El día 28 se celebrará una mesa redonda con la participación de Carina Bellver (storyData Barcelona -  periodismo de datos), Frederic Guerrero-Solé (UPF - doctor en comunicación pública) Jordi Muñoz Mendoza (UB - politólogo). La mesa redonda será moderada por Luce Prignano (Héuristica/UBICS - científica de redes).    El día 29 será dedicado a la presentación de estudios y proyectos y al debate. Para proponer una ponencia es necesario rellenar el formulario online antes del 13 de Nobiembre.

Los idiomas principales del workshop son el catalán y el castellano, pero propuestas en inglés también son bien recibidas. El evento es gratuito y abierto a quien quiera acudir.

TITLE: Physics of active matter: A personal overview

ABSTRACT: Active matter consists of elementary units producing mechanical work to move themselves or to displace other objects. In other words, active matter is about systems maintained out-of-equilibrium "in the bulk", burning energy to produce directed, persistent motion. This very general definition covers all kinds of situations at all scales: groups of animal or robots, collective of cells and micro-organisms, active colloids and phoretic swimmers, mixtures of biofilaments and motor proteins. Most active matter systems exhibit surprising if not spectacular emerging collective properties that we are only starting to understand. In this talk, I will strive to give a synthetic and organized overview of what is still a fast-growing field. This overview will however be rather personal, drawing mostly from my own work. A large part if the talk will be devoted to presenting experimental results obtained mostly on living active matter, which should be of interest to biologists.

Title: Matter, Life, and Society: An Overview in Complex Systems Perspectives

Abstract: Every object we experience with our sensory organs is a many-particle system consisting of a large number of elements interacting with each other, and the collective behavior of the whole system emerges via cooperative phenomena due to the interactions. In nature, many-particle systems often exhibit so-called complexity at the boundary between order and disorder, and tend to have self-organized structure under the influence of the environment. From this viewpoint of the complex system, not only traditional matter but also life and society are complex systems composed of many elements; life or social phenomena can be interpreted as the collective properties emerging from the interactions between elements. In this overview, we will briefly examine the physical meaning of complex systems and introduce some studies of matter, life, and society in the complex systems perspectives. Instances include glucose regulation, neural networks, urban morphology, and transportation networks.
